For those who need a bit of assistance:
Video files to PSP
The file type necessary for the PSP is .mp4. This is quite a rare file type and because of this it can be difficult to get video file that are preformatted for your PSP. If you wish to play .mp4 video on your computer, you will need Apple Quicktime software. Video files also have to have the name “M4VXXXXX.mp4”, where “XXXXX” is replaced by numbers. The videos must also be accompanied by a thumbnail file, give the same initial name, but with the .thm file extension.
Converting video files or DVDs to your PSP takes several stages. For getting a DVD on to PSP follow all of the stages. For putting non-PSP-ready video files on your PSP follow stages 2 to 4. For creating custom thumbnails for a PSP-ready video file and then moving both to your PSP, follow stages 3 to 4. For moving a PSP-ready video with thumbnail on to your PSP, follow stage 4.
Stage 1 - DVD to PC
Stage 2 - Video file to PSP-ready format
Stage 3 - Custom thumbnails
Stage 4 - PSP-ready video and thumbnail to PSP
Stage 1 – DVD to PC
For this process you will need the DVD Decrypter software, available at www.dvddecrypter.com, then install the software. First, insert the DVD disk into your DVD drive and open the DVD Decrypter software. Select the source drive that you will be decrypting from. Next, go to the “mode” tab and then select “IFO I”. Now click the “tools” tab, and click “settings”. For the software to decrypt the DVD into one single file, you now need to click the “IFO Mode” tab, and then under options, choose “none” under file splitting. This may not be possible on Windows 98 due to file size constraints. Now click the OK button.
Under the “Input” tab you now need to select the section wanted (most likely to be the long choice). If you wish to not import some of the chapters, uncheck the relevant boxes below. Now click the “stream processing” tab and click the “Enable stream processing” box. Then you need to choose the video and audio elements you want to decrypt. Only 2 channel sound is necessary for PSP viewing, so if you want, choose a “2ch” if available, but beware that this may be a directors commentary. Now choose a suitable destination for the file that will be created and then click the DVD to HDD button below to start ripping. Now leave the software until it is complete.
Stage 2 – Video file to PSP-ready format
For this process you will need the PSP Video 9 software, available at www.pspvideo9.com, then install the software. First, open the software and click the “Setup” image across the top. You can now choose where the video files will be moved to when complete. Now click the “Profiles” tab and then click “New Profile”. Name the profile “For films”, or something distinctive. Now select the following settings:
Video - 368x208 resolution, 256 constant bitrate, 29.97 framerate, one pass
Audio - 96 bitrate, stereo channel, 24000 sample rate, volume 200%
Now click the “Convert” image and then click “New job”.
Select the file you wish to convert, which will be a .vob file if decrypted from DVD, then enter a name for the video. This will be the name displayed on the PSP so choose an appropriate title. You now need to select the profile you just created, and then click “apply”. The software will now convert the file into the PSP-ready .mp4 format with a file name the PSP will be able to recognise. A .thm thumbnail file will also be created, taking an image from the first scene of the video. Now leave the software until the conversion is complete.
Stage 3 – Custom Thumbnails
If you want to create a custom thumbnail for a video file you have, eg. a certain scene from the video, or the title it is simple to create but ideally require Adobe Photoshop. First you need to find an image for the thumbnail. Now save the image and open it in Paint. Now “select all”, under the “edit” tab, and then click “copy”. Open Photoshop and create a new file, which will automatically be sized to any image you have on the copy clipboard. Now press paste the image onto the background and crop any sections out of the image you do not want, leaving a polygon. Now click file and then “save for web”. Under “settings” choose a .jpg file then check the “optimised” box and ensure “100” is selected for “quality”. Below, now click the “image size” tab, uncheck the “constrain properties” box and then set the size to 160 wide by 120 tall. Now click save and find the folder where the relevant video is stored, then click save. Delete any current thumbnail that accompanies the video then copy the initial name of the video (assuming it is in the M4VXXXXX.mp4 type), and replace the .jpg name with “M4VXXXXX.thm”.
Stage 4 - PSP-ready video and thumbnail to PSP
With a correctly named .mp4 video and accompanying .thm file, you are now ready to transfer the file over to your PSP. After connecting your PSP to your computer, or inserting your memory stick duo into your computer using an adapter, you need to first find the “MP_ROOT” folder. If this does not exist on your PSP memory stick duo, then simply create a folder with the identical name. Then inside this ensure there is a folder called “100MNV01”, if not, then simply create a file with the identical name. You now need to drag and drop the video and accompanying thumbnail files you wish to view on your PSP, into this file. Once complete, disconnect the PSP, and you are ready to watch them.
On the “Home” screen, choose “Video” and then select the video you wish to view. Press the triangle to display the control panel, then press X to select the operations. _________________

assuming E: is your psp _________________ email pics or vids related to the psp to sonypspspot.pspspsp@tamw.com |

is it possible for converted movies to appear full size (like the UMD movies) on the PSP? The movies all have the black letterbox lines on top and bottom, even though they are wide screen versions. When I play with the video settings, the "original" option makes it smaller, and the others dont change it much.
Thanks |

Well, you are basically only converting the format of the DVD, and not the aspect ration. _________________
